Estonian actions - detailed description
Skype book club /Skype raamatuklubi
What:For every "Skype book club" meeting a group of library patrons will gather at the Department of foreign languages of the Tallinn Central Library. At the same time a group of library patrons will gather at a library in a foreign nation. Each group has previously read an identical short fictional text. Both groups have read the text in their mother tongue. Both groups have discussed the text and analysed it while keeping the following questions in mind: Would the meaning of this text change for me if I wasn't Estonian, Finnish, Latvian, Russian, German etc? Would the meaning change if I read it in a different language? Would I understand it differently if I was older/younger of born in a different time? Would the meaning change if I was/wasn't a member of a particular religious group? Does my cultural or historical background change the meaning? During the Skype meeting the groups will discuss the text while keeping these issues in mind. Each meeting will be moderated by a cultural figure who will be present at the Estonian side but visible and audible to both sides. There will be 7 "Skype book club" meetings in total.
When: About once a month during the period on 01.09.2015-31.05.2016
Responsibility: Coordinator Kristel Palk (Tallinn Central Library)
Outcomes:The participants will have a better understanding of themselves and of others. At the end of each meeting both groups will hopefully reach the conclusion that we may sometimes understand things differently but there are usually objective reasons for this and therefore our differences of opinion should be seen as an opportunity for learning and not a source of conflict.
Speak to me! / Räägi minuga!
What:During each meeting a group of ethnic Estonians and a group of ethnic Russians will meet at the Department of foreign languages of the Tallinn Central Library to discuss problems in the Estonian society that are inhibiting the Estonian society from becoming more cohesive. Each meeting will have a different specific topic for the groups to discuss. Each discussion will be moderated by an expert on that topic. There will be 4 meetings in total. The topics for the meetings are the following: 1. The language skills of immigrants. 2. The unemployment issue of immigrants. 3. The "nation within a nation" phenomenon. 4. The emigration of brains from Estonia.
When: About once every two months during the period on 01.09.2015-31.05.2016
Responsibility: Coordinator Kristel Palk (Tallinn Central Library)
Outcomes: The participants have an opportunity to meet and speak to their fellow country(wo)men and discuss issues that are "burning" in the Estonian society. By having these discussions both groups will become more familiar with the viewpoints of the other group while having a chance to voice their own concerns. Every good idea that comes up during the discussion will be forwarded to the specific ministry of the Estonian governement that deals with this issue. Hopefully the ministries will take these suggestions seriously and a change that has its roots in a grassroot level, will be able to take place.
To understand or to condemn / Mõista või hukka mõista
What: This will be a seires of educational movie nights. The movies that will be shown will be on various topics that educate the viewers about issues that need to be addressed in today's world - aging societies, immigration and emigration, digitalization, globalization, gay rights, environmental issues and so on. Each night will begin with all participants writing down a short paragraph or drawing a picture of what the issue at hand means in their mind before seeing the film. After viewing the film they shall do the same. As a result we will be able to see if these films have had an effect on the viewers and to which extent this change has taken place. There will be 5 movie nights in total. We are asking for funds to purchase the licences that allow us to show these films.
When: About once every two months during the period on 01.09.2015-31.05.2016
Responsibility: Coordinator Kaie Viigipuu-Kreintaal (Tallinn Central Library)
Outcomes:The participants will be more knowledable, inspired and able to go out into the society and start a change.
Different or special? / Erinev või eriline?
What: The aim of these meetings is to introduce to the library patrons different types of people who are normally shunned and/or feared by the general public because of too little information (people with various diseases, people of different race, people who dress differently, have abnormal physical appearance etc). These "different" people will get a chance to introduce themselves, talk about their differences and what makes them special. The listeners have an opportunity to ask questions and to educate themselves about these groups of people. There will be 5 meetings in total and 2 visitors who represent the "special or different" groups at each meeting.
When: About once every two months during the period on 01.09.2015-31.05.2016
Responsibility: Coordinator Epp Leikop (Tallinn Central Library)
Outcomes: We hope to see that as a result of getting to know these people who are "different or special" our library patrons will be less afraid of differences and will spread the message of accepting differences among their friends and family.
Chainstory / Kettlugu
What:The video will have librarians from all over the world tell a joint fairytale. The video will begin with the first librarian telling the first two sentences of the story in their mother tongue. Then the video will be sent to the next librarian in another country who will continue the story in their own mother tongue. After having travelled to about 15-20 places, the video will be sent back to Estonia where it will be edited and the English subtitles added. The finished video will then be uploaded to Youtube. The video can then be used by librarians all over the world during various library events.
When:September-December of 2015
Responsibility: Coordinator Kristel Palk (Tallinn Central Library)
Outcomes:The resulting video will demonstrate that all over the world there are librarians who look different, sound different and use different kinds of languages. But at the same time they can come together and tell a story together. This will demonstrate that despite differences we can do great things together.
